Attractions in Pensacola, Florida

By Timothy Sexton

Attractions in Pensacola, Florida
Pensacola, Florida, has the longest European history of any city in the U.S. This northwest Florida beach town was home to the first non-permanent Spanish settlement in the New World. Visitors can catch glimpses into the past as well as enjoy modern conveniences and luxury beachfront hotels. The longtime presence of the U.S. military also marks Pensacola's personality.

Naval Air Station

The Naval Air Station at Pensacola has long been the starting ground for future Navy pilots. It is the summer home of the Blue Angels, which often give free air shows when the pilots practice their loops and tight formations. The National Naval Aviation Museum is here, and is home to a vast collection of vintage planes, an IMAX theater and motion-controlled flying simulators.

Perdido Bay Country Club

Pensacola offers you the chance to walk in the footsteps of golfing legends like Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus. The golf course at Perdido Bay Golf Club hosted the Pensacola Open PGA tournament for a decade. The course is a thing of beauty. The fairways are long, straight and tight because the course is designed around the country club subdivision that surrounds it. There are tall trees lining the fairways. Spacious lakes and ponds adorn many of the holes.

Pensacola Beach

Cross the Three Mile Bridge and travel through Gulf Breeze to get to Pensacola Beach. The sound side is perfect for families with little kids, because there are no big waves or a riptide. The sound is also less crowded, and you'll find covered benches with a barbecue grill. The Gulf side of the beach features bigger waves, bigger crowds and many big hotels and condos. The waves are generally not big enough for good surfing, making Pensacola Beach an excellent choice for swimming. The family atmosphere is strictly enforced by beach patrols, so you can bring the kids and not worry about rowdy behavior.
