Located 41 miles north of Sarasota, the Clearwater/St. Petersburg International Airport (PIE) has service from discount and charter airlines that focus on northern cities. Allegiant Air, which began service to in 2006, is the major carrier, and it serves Midwest and northern destinations. Many airlines offer seasonal service (winter/spring). The airport has a single terminal with 12 gates and a customs area for international travelers. Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz and National car rental agencies are on site. The airport has three intersecting runways, the longest of which is 9,700 feet. Private planes are welcome and served in a separate terminal area.

Tampa International
The closest major airport to Sarasota, Tampa International Airport (TPA) is 43 miles north of Sarasota and is serviced by most major commercial and discount carriers as well as most rental car agencies. The airport serves more than 60 destinations and is a key hub for AirTran, Continental Connection and Southwest. The airport terminal is a central ticketing and baggage claim area that is connected to five satellite terminals by large, automated shuttle cars. International flights arrive at Satellite E and there is a customs area. There are three runways, the longest of which is 11,002 feet, and private planes are welcomed at a separate terminal area.
