Central Ohio, which is the 200-mile region between Canton and Dayton that contains the city of Columbus, is an excellent destination for the well-traveled golfer. This region has more than 100 public courses, including several that are highly ranked. If you arrive here for a golf vacation, you will have no shortage of fairway time.

Airport Golf Course

Near Columbus's city center, this course has 18 holes and a par of 70. The slope rating is 114. It has mature trees, challenging water hazards and historic aircraft placed on the course courtesy of the Port of Columbus International Airport. If you plan to visit often, consider a membership pass. It lets you golf anytime for an entire year. This course has practice greens and offers lessons.

Chapel Hill Golf Course

Barry Serafin designed this 18-hole course. It has almost 190 acres of fairway, with a challenging slope rating of 125. This course was built on land that formerly belonged to Mount Vernon Bible College. The clubhouse was created from a converted chapel and sells both golf supplies and souvenirs. Par is 72 and some holes feature wooded surroundings. There are seven water hazards. Golf carts are available but not required.

Green Acres Golf Course

This excellent beginner course, located in Marion, Ohio, has a low par of just 60 for 18 holes. The total length is just 3,746 yards. While it is walkable, a golf cart is included with your green fees. There are only two water hazards and rough areas are minimal. If you'd like to work on any aspect of your game, you can take advantage of lessons, which are offered regularly for both youth and adults. You can book an individual or group sessions in blocks of 30 or 60 minutes. Leagues meet every Monday, Tuesday and Friday.

Whetstone Golf Club

If you like older style courses, you may really enjoy this one. It was built in 1971 and still retains its original 18-hole layout. The fairway is made up of rolling hills and flat ground and contains six water hazards. In addition to the 18-hole, par-72 course, this club has a practice range, a pro shop and meeting facilities for groups up to 250. You can play seven days a week with or without a golf cart. Seniors over 55 get a discounted rate on Mondays and Tuesdays.
