Before its strategic wartime usage during two American wars, the island was inhabited by Native American settlements and was a place of commerce for the Great Lakes fur trade. Today, the island is a National Historic Landmark and popular tourist destination. On Mackinac there is the famed Wawashkamo Golf Club and several historic hotels, making Mackinac Island a superb family golf getaway.
