Latest Technology Is Best Way T0 Have Clubs That Fit To Tee
By Lynn DeBruin, Rocky Mountain News - May 25, 2005
Slick ads tout the incredible distance.
Touring professionals swear by them. But as one Denver golfer discovered after a recent club-fitting session, the worst possible ball for his game was the $50-a-dozen Titleist Pro V1s.
"He figured because they were expensive and good, they were good for him," said Ty Thompson, director of operations at D'Lance Golf Performance Center.
Just the opposite was revealed with the use of computer-assisted technology, which in recent years has become available to the general public.
Not only can the new launch monitors show which clubheads, shafts, flex and lofts are best for an individual, they can tell golfers the best ball for them to play.
"This really takes the guesswork out of it. You can go home feeling that you've made the right choice," said Joe Egnoski, master club-fitter and merchandise manager for the McGetrick Golf Academy at Green Valley Ranch Golf Course.
So what's a launch monitor?
It's a laptop computer hooked up to one or more high-speed cameras that take close-up photographs of the ball at the moment of impact and again a nanosecond after impact.
Data is fed from the cameras into the computer, which calculates the ball's speed, launch angle, total spin, backspin, side spin, degree off line, club head speed, carry distance and flight time.
The numbers might be confusing to the average player, but they are valuable to the fitter as they reveal exactly which clubs work best - and why.
Egnoski said he typically uses a person's old driver as a benchmark, then gathers data as a player hits a variety of brands, lofts, shafts, etc...
