How to Carry a Golf Bag
By Steve Silverman
Not everybody belongs to a country club and can take an electric cart to play golf. Many would say the challenge of playing a round of 18 holes is walking the course and carrying your own clubs. A golf bag can weigh 30 or more pounds, as a golfer can have up to 14 clubs in his bag and many carry extra equipment, such as a portable rake (for bunkers), an umbrella, balls and tees. However, there are ways to carry the bag that make it more palatable and satisfying.
Instructions
Difficulty: Moderate
Put the large strap on the golf bag over your strong shoulder. If you are right-handed, this is almost always your right shoulder. If you are left-handed, this is your left shoulder. Place the strap over the front of your shoulder and walk with a slight forward lean.
Study the course map if you have not played a particular course before. You are carrying your bag for 18 holes, but that does not mean you have to carry your bag every step of the way. For example, the first green and the second tee may be quite near each other and go in opposite directions. After you hit your approach shot on the green, take your putter, your driver and your tee with you and leave the bag about 100 to 150 yards away from the second tee. This will save you steps and preserve your energy.
Take frequent water breaks when you are carrying your own bag. You need to stay hydrated during the process, particularly during the hot months of summer; drink every 15-20 minutes to avoid dehydration. However, don't take anything for granted in the spring or fall either. When in doubt, take a break for water or a sports drink.
Save your steps. You may not be a professional golfer and therefore you may have to look for a lost ball from time to time. When you have to go into rough terrain to look for a ball, place your golf bag down on the edge of the fairway and bring the club you want to use and another ball just in case your original shot is lost. Many golfers make the mistake of not putting the bag down and wasting valuable energy because they don't know which club they will use next. This will hurt badly over the course of an 18-hole round.
Tips & Warnings
You are getting three of four times as much exercise as those that walk without carrying their bag and infinitely more exercise than those who take a cart.
