How to Use Golf Cart Batteries for Emergency Power
By Javanx3d
Natural disasters can strike with little notice. Providing emergency power for your home is a common need after disaster strikes. Having a portable generator to provide power for essential home appliances is the best insurance against power outages, but, if you own a golf cart, you can use your electric golf cart's batteries to power your home in place of a generator until electricity is restored.
Instructions
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Remove three batteries from your golf cart's battery bank. To remove the batteries, disconnect the coupling cables that interlink the six batteries in the cart. After the coupling cables are removed, disconnect the restraining clips holding the batteries in place and lift three batteries out of the cart.
Place the three batteries into a plastic storage container. Connect the batteries in parallel by using the coupling cables to connect the common poles of each battery in sequence.
Lay a plastic tarp over the storage bin but do not secure to the container. The new battery bank needs to be covered but ventilated.
Attach the positive and negative leads from your power inverter to the positive and negative leads of one of the end batteries in the storage bin. The number of power plugs on the inverter is normally determined by the size and price of the device.
Run extension cords from your power inverter to any household equipment you want to run on emergency power.
