How to Punch Your Hybrids
By Patrick Foley
When you need to hit a shot that cuts through the wind and goes a long distance, a punch hybrid shot is the way to go. The punch hybrid should be a goto shot when the winds pick up and you need a shot to get deep down the fairway. With a few simple tips you will be crushing the ball low and hard down the fairway.
Instructions
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Set up the ball. It is important to put the ball a little farther back into the stance on a punch shot. On a normal hybrid shot, you would put the ball of the front foot. To help bring the area of impact farther back, bring the ball inside of the front foot but not all the way to the middle of your stance. It should be about halfway from the middle to the front foot. This will help put the ball in the area of proper impact.
Shorten your backswing. A shortened backswing is important so that you can control the clubhead through impact. The backswing for a hybrid punch should only go to waist high; this is imperative for controlling the club through the impact zone and keeping the ball low off contact.
Focus on keeping the follow through low through impact. Your follow through should go out toward the target and finish about waist high. Also, focus on bringing the hands through impact and shake hands with the pin. This will increase the distance on the shot and keep it hot off the clubface.
Keep the shot smooth. This shot will come off low and hard if you hit it correctly. There is no need to try and kill the ball. Let the club do the work, and you will get the desired shot. Be confident and crush it!
