How to Get a Discount on Hotels
By Chris Joseph
Your golf vacation should be a time for fun and relaxation, so you don't want to reduce some of the pleasure by overspending for a hotel room. You can usually save a lot of money by planning in advance and by taking advantage of all available discounts. Keep in mind that a hotel rate is often negotiable, so don't accept the published rate as being carved in stone.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Plan your golf trip for your destination's off-peak travel season, if possible. Hotels typically drop their rates when business is slow, so you can save a lot of money during these times. You may also find a much better selection of hotels that have rooms available. Weekday stays are normally cheaper than on weekends.
Use the Internet to compare hotels and prices. A tool such as Hotels.com contains information on more than 85,000 hotels. Just by entering your search criteria, you will be able to check rates for hotels near your destination and get information on special sales. This can save you the hassle of having to contact a large number of hotels individually.
Make use of any discounts that may be available to you. Hotels often offer discounts for senior citizens, students or military personnel. You can sometimes save money by making reservations with a certain credit card. You can also call a travel agent to see if any discount packages to your destination may be available.
Contact the hotel once you have made your choice. By negotiating, you may be able to find additional discounts, especially during slow periods. Also check if additional perks may be available, such as free breakfast or even a room upgrade. Be sure to ask for the manager when you call.
Ask for additional discounts when you check in, especially if you notice that the hotel does not appear to be full. This is often a good way to receive a free upgrade. You can also check to see if certain paid amenities can be had for free. For example, if the hotel charges for Internet access, ask them if they can waive the charge.
Tips & Warnings
If you subscribe to any golf publications, be sure to check them for hotel discounts or coupons.
