How to Vacation in Hawaii With Kids
By Sarah Dray
Hawaii can be paradise for the whole family as long as you're well prepared for the trip. And while Hawaii is certainly a golfer's paradise, it is also a great place to take the kids, thanks to its many natural sites, children's programs and historical sites.
Instructions
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Be prepared for the plane ride. Think of the flight as an extreme car ride. Having toys, personal DVD players (or a notebook), coloring books and even a favorite blanket will make the flight more bearable for your kids. Pack a snack too to keep tummies happy, especially if no meals are served on board.
Choose a hotel that offers kids programs or is family-friendly. Look for a place where children can be dropped off for a couple of hours so the grownups can have some fun on their own. On the Big Island, Hilton Waikoloa Village's kids' camps offers a discovery center, a book corner, an art area and a Hawaiian dramatic play area. Even if your hotel doesn't have a special children's camp, look for amenities that the young ones will enjoy. A pool with a shallow area is a must, and many hotels offer playgrounds, water slides and fun cultural programs aimed at kids.
Prepare in advance for outings. Make sure you bring along snacks, a drink and baby wipes. For young kids, don't forget diapers, even if your intention is only to be out for a couple of hours. Don't count on being able to find the right item at the last minute.
Get the kids involved in the activities. If you're going to the beach, bring or rent a boogie board. Rent a child-size bike to tour the island on your own if joining a bus tour seems too daunting. Giving your kid their own digital camera or a journal (depending on age) can help them feel like they're part of the fun.
