How to Build Your Own Rear Golf Cart Seat
By Jay Kurz
Golf carts are a popular tool for the avid golfer. They can even be used as a recreational vehicle around the house. Golf carts generally come with two seats, four seats or with a rack on the back for hauling things. If you own a two-seat cart and you often use the cart with more than two people, you can add a back seat fairly easily using some common materials. All the supplies needed for this job can be found at your local home improvement store.
Instructions
Difficulty: Moderate
Measure the length and width of the front seat and transfer those measurements to a piece of plywood. Put on the safety glasses and use the circular saw to cut the plywood.
Use the scissors to cut a piece of vinyl that's three inches bigger than the plywood on all four sides.
Cut a piece of three-inch-thick foam that's the same size as the plywood. Coat the face of the plywood with spray adhesive and apply the foam. Let the glue dry completely.
Lay the vinyl on the ground with the inside of the vinyl up. Place the plywood in the center of the vinyl with the foam against the vinyl. Pull the vinyl tight around the plywood and staple it to the wood one side at a time.
Measure straight back from the rear roof stabilizer bar to directly over the rear bumper. Then measure from that point down to the bumper and add the measurements together. Put on the face shield and cut two pieces of two-inch-square metal pipe to that length using a right-angle grinder. These pipes will be the rear seat supports. Measure the distance between the rear roof stabilizer bars and cut a piece of the two-inch-square pipe to that measurement; it will act as a stabilizer bar for the rear seat supports.
Mark the two rear seat supports at the point where they will bend at a 90-degree angle down to the bumper. Place the pipe in a table vice and slowly heat the pipe with a propane torch on the mark until the metal is hot enough to bend at a 90-degree angle. Use a square to get the pipe at the correct angle. Repeat the same process for the other identical pipe.
Clamp the first angled pipe into place going from the rear roof stabilizer bar down to the rear bumper. Drill through the roof stabilizer bar and the pipe using an electric drill with a 1/4-inch bit. Secure the pipe to the stabilizer bar using a 1/4-inch bolt. Connect the other by using the same process. Connect the stabilizer bar to the two rear seat support bars on the top side, two inches from the bend in the pipes using the drill and 1/4-inch bit. Secure the bar with 1/4-inch bolts.
Place the rear seat on top of the seat supports and connect it with two heavy-duty elastic straps.
