How to Improve Chipping Technique in Golf
By Kevin D. Boehler
Chipping is a technique that is used to get the ball onto the green from very short distances. When a golf ball is chipped, it stays in the air for a very short period of time and rolls toward the hole. With such a short shot, a chip swing should not be very complicated.
Instructions
Difficulty: Easy
Set up to the ball with a good chipping stance: feet close together, weight on the front foot, ball back of center and hands ahead of the ball.
Rock shoulders back to start the chipping motion and let the arms and hands follow.
Keep wrists from hinging to prevent unneeded club head movement.
Rock shoulders forward to begin the downswing, letting the arms and hands follow.
Make contact with the ball while keeping your hands ahead of the club face throughout the entire swing.
Tips & Warnings
Practice at home or in the yard with no golf balls to get a good feel for the swing.
Pay attention to the setup. A bad setup will not allow a good chipping motion.
