How to Become a Golf Professional

How to Become a Golf Professional
Having a career as a golf professional does not necessarily mean playing in national tournaments and competing with the likes of Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson in the U.S. Open and the Masters. Golfers who reach the PGA tour are the elite of the elite and are the best golf competitors in the world. They represent just a small percentage of the professional golfers in the United States and the world. Many other golf professionals run pro shops and give lessons and make a fine living in the process.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging
Step 1
Learn the game at a young age. The younger you are when you start playing golf the better your chances are for becoming a top player. You can correct bad habits as a young player more easily than you can when you are older. The better you understand the mechanics of the swing, the better you should be able to explain how it works to other golfers.
Step 2
Play in as many tournaments as you can find at the youth level. Getting experience in tournament play will prepare you for the pressure you will face as a college player and then a young professional on the tour. You may be able to shoot an even par round when playing with your friends or possibly even go low (under par). But you must be able to do it when competing with other golfers if you are serious about becoming a professional. Golf is a game of psychological discipline that must be developed through competition.
Step 3
Practice your swing. Go to the driving range and do it with a purpose. It's not enough just to bash balls and groove your swing. Instead, take your driver, 3-wood, 3-iron, 5-iron and 7-iron when you go to the range and hit 15 balls with each club. You have to understand the nuances of the game and the differences in your swing depending on the club you use. Take lesson continuously. Even pros have coaches.
Step 4
Stay in shape. In generations past, top pros like Jack Nicklaus and Miller Barber were rather rotund in stature. That philosophy has changed. Getting stronger and gaining endurance will only help you in your round of golf. When you are in shape and in the midst of a round of golf, you are only thinking about your next shot. When you are not in shape, you are thinking about finishing the round and in a state of fatigue. As a result you are not concentrating on and you can't produce your best shot.
Step 5
Learn to communicate the nuances of the game and the golf swing to others. Most golf pros will not make the tour and and will make their living as golf instructors. Even if you understand the game and the swing perfectly, it won't do you any good as a teacher if you can't communicate it to your students.

Tips & Warnings

Put your last round of golf behind you as soon as it is over. Whether it was the best round of your life, your worst or somewhere in between, you have to go on to the next round and learn to concentrate on your next shot and not think back about what might have been.
