How to Hit a Golf Ball Lower
By Michael Joseph
Being able to hit the ball low can allow you to escape from trees, play better in the wind and execute a bump-and-run shot. The best way to hit a golf ball low is with a low-lofted club, but this technique will lower the trajectory on any club you choose.
Instructions
Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Position the ball off the inside of your back leg. Position your hands in the middle of your stance so they are forward of the ball at address.
Choke down on the club approximately 2 inches.
Make a normal backswing, but take it to only 3/4 of your full backswing.
Begin your downswing. Keep your head and spine angle level. Accelerate through the ball while keeping your hands in front of the clubhead. Do not let the clubhead pass your hands.
Abbreviate your follow-through to a low finish after impact. At impact, your hand position should be similar to the address position.
Tips & Warnings
Use this technique with one extra club to get the correct distance (if you hit an 8-iron 150 yards, you will need to hit a 7-iron to hit 150 yards).
A fast swing and an abbreviated follow-through puts stress on the back. Make sure you stretch and are loose before attempting this shot.
