Myrtle Beach Entertainment

Theatres

Since 1986, when ambitious local musician showman Calvin Gilmore thought the increasing number of golfers visiting the Grand Strand might enjoy nighttime entertainment other than just clubs and amusement parks and opened his Carolina Opry music theatre, the Strand's live theatre scene has grown more than ten-fold. Golfers came and families too, and today there are nearly a dozen live entertainment theatre venues in Myrtle Beach. Golfers, families, tour groups and other visitors can enjoy the best of country, contemporary, variety and Broadway, with both afternoon and evening shows available. The music group Alabama's original home was The Bowery at the Myrtle Beach Pavilion. Today the Alabama Theatre hosts celebrity acts year round, with the group itself performing a number of dates. There's also House of Blues, a restaurant/ music venue which features national acts in its Music Hall. And the IMAX Theatre's special giant screen productions combine brilliant images filling a viewer's peripheral vision and superb sound to give everyone the "best seat in the house".

Nightclubs

From pulsating lights and rhythms at area dance clubs to high tech sports bars to comedy clubs to first-class "gentlemen's" clubs, the night scene explodes at Myrtle Beach. Many clubs are clustered in the North Myrtle Beach area, including several where you can experience real beach music and "the shag". The dance originated there in the 40s when party-goers trying to dance the jitterbug tended to slow the tempo down "a bit" because they'd had a little too much libations. It's now South Carolina's State Dance. At Celebrity Square at Broadway at the Beach, a variety of nightclubs line the pedestrian only "street". The Attic, the Strand's only under-21 nightclub, is located at the Myrtle Beach Pavilion.
