Dominating the area from the southeast is Haleakala (House of the Sun), the
world's largest dormant volcanic crater. Its slopes embrace 500 square miles of
tropical rain forest, arid deserts, lush cattle ranches and some of the most
spectacular scenery anywhere on this planet.
Golf is available to guests of the various hotels or condominiums of
Wailea
on three 18-hole layouts. Each of these courses will provide not only a real test of
your skill, but views that make it difficult to keep your mind on the game.
The Wailea Blue Course
reaches out 6,758/6,152/5,291 yards and pars at 72. While this layout brings water into
contention on four holes, it is more open and forgiving than the Gold Course.
The Gold Course,
also with a par of 72, measures a very healthy 7,070/6,653/6,152/5,317 yards. Both operate from the same
pro shop. A third course,
The Emerald,
opened in early 1995. Parring at 72, it plays to a yardage of 6,824/6,395/5,887/5/444.
Now back to Wailea. In addition to golf, there is a picturesque hillside tennis
complex offering 14 courts (11 hard and three grass), a pro shop, and an
exhibition stadium seating 1,200. Hotel accommodations are offered at the Maui
Prince Hotel, Stouffer Wailea, the superb Four Seasons Resort Wailea, the lovely
Kea Lani Hotel, the massive Grand Wailea, Outrigger Wailea, Renaissance
Wailea Beach Resort, and Wailea Elua Village.
Although the restaurants at the various resorts are excellent, we also suggest
The Chart House Restaurant, adjacent to the Blue Course at Wailea, at 100
Wailea Ike Drive. You will find it very good indeed. Another great place is the Sea
Watch Restaurant, located in the clubhouse of the Wailea Gold/Emerald
Courses. The food, service and realistic pricing is very welcome, and they are
open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
