The sheer, stark, beauty of this area is difficult to describe. It is truly "High Country." The highest point in
Wyoming
is 13,804 feet (Gannett Peak),
but what is not generally realized is that the lowest point is still
3,100 feet above sea level (Belle Fourche River).
Located on the floor of the valley, surrounded by mountains on all sides, the Arnold Palmer-designed
Teton Pines Golf Course
will give you all you can handle. With its undulating fairways, the course plays 7,401/6,888/6,333/5,486
yards, parring at 72, and is without a doubt one of the most beautiful layouts we have seen. A few of its more
challenging features include the distraction of the magnificent Teton Mountain views, 40 acres of water either
threatening or coming into play on 11 holes, and three acres of sand spread over 50 bunkers. There is more than
enough water to make you think you are in
Florida.
The tennis pavilion offers use of the private athletic club, including saunas, whirlpools, steam rooms, a
Nautilus-equipped workout room and outdoor heated swimming pool. Racquetball and tennis are also
available; court fees are charged. A separate structure houses the seven-court complex (three indoor courts
with a center stadium court). There is another unusual attraction - a fly-fishing school. Headed up by nationally
recognized fly-fishing expert Jack Dennis, instruction covers how to tie a fly, read a stream, cast for trout, and
all the other fine points. There is also access to river rafting, horseback riding, and polo.
As for winter sports, the property has a 10-kilometer cross-country ski course; Teton Village, which has downhill
skiing, is only four miles away. This is one of the largest ski areas in the United States, and has a vertical drop
of 4,139 feet. Both resorts provide shuttle service during the winter.
In addition to the Country Club restaurants, there are two eating experiences awaiting you. The Blue Lion in
Jackson is open for lunch as well as dinner. One of their specialties is Jalapeño Garlic Shrimp - it is as good
as it sounds. Another good restaurant is Stieglers at the Racquet Club Resort, which serves Austrian/
Continental cuisine.
