I've walked Pine Valley during the Crump Cup for several years. Last fall, I had the golf experience of a lifetime as I got to play this course for the first time. George Crump was a genius, not only for what he personally brought to the design but also for whom he brought to the design. Most of the Philadelphia School architects of the Golden Age consulted. A few holes were finished by Hugh Wilson (Merion) after Crump's unfortunate demise but in complete accord with Crump's intent. Golf friends A.W. Tillinghast (Bethpage, Olympic, Baltusrol) and George Thomas (Whitemarsh Valley, Riviera) offered some helpful suggestions. Travis was there as were as were Henry and William Fownes (Oakmont). Harry Colt (Sunningdale, Royal Portrush) was Crump's principal guide but Crump remained in complete artistic control. Don't just take my word for it, Donald Ross called Pine Valley, "... simply the finest golf course in the world". RTJ also put it quite well, "Pine Valley has more classic golf holes than any other course in the world - 10 of 18. Of the remaining holes 5 are outstanding, 2 are good, and 1 (the twelfth) is ordinary, which at Pine valley is tantamount to being a misfit." PVGC has only hosted two Walker Cups but I can't imagine why anyone would think that the touring pros would "smoke the place". When I was there, the course was playing to a 74.2 rating with a 154 slope at 6853 yards. That places it in the top five courses in the country in terms of difficulty. I saw the Littler-Nelson match that included Littler's 11 at the par 3 fifth. The tour doesn't get to PV because they're not invited and because the compact design would not handle crowds well. I've played nearly 500 different courses and I've never seen one to compare... just my opinion.

I've had the fortune of playing Pebble Beach, Shinnecock, Merion, Ballybunion, Old Head, Tralee and many other world class golf courses. Pine Valley is absolutely the most unbelievable collection of golf holes ever created anywhere. I'm still in awe having played it yesterday and had a 76 from the blue tees. I cannot say enough good things about this heavenly place and those who truly appreciate the game should have a chance to play sometime in their lifetime. The entire experience exceeded my expectations in every way and I hope to have an opportunity to return someday.

Everybody can't be wrong. But, I agree with another evaluator-- how about a Woods/Mickelson match here, stroke or match play.Let's see how the best play here. If Phil can't come, invite Sabatini! Oh,I have the tape of the 1962 match--Littler took an 8 on number 5, NOT 11, while Nelson took a par, using a choke down driver. Also, Tillinghast did NOT design Olmpic Club, W.Reid did that one.One may be thinking of Winged Foot. Finally, according to Dan Jenkins in 1966, only holes 11 and 12 were unfinished at the time of Crump's death, not "a few".

There is a reason PV has been rated the best course in the US for decades, there is nothing comparable to it. Just a shame they cannot hold competitive events on it so more golfers can appreciate this design. Unique is not a big enough word for PV, I have enjoyed every round played there, but I don't know another course like it. Food is excellent, setting is very special. The short course is unlike any other. Only Augusta rivals the traditions and understated elegance. If you get the chance to play, drop everything and go.

It is undoubtably the greatest golf experience anyone who loves the game could have. From staying in Crump Cabin, playing the par 3 course, Dinner at the Club House including the Turtle Soup and drinking a bottle of wine from the "Endangered Species List" to 18 holes of the most Beautiful Golf Course, it doesn't get any better. All I can say is I am not afraid to die....because I know what Heaven looks like !...

Hey I walked the course during the Crump. It was a visual delight,no frills no gimicks just incredably well designed. In fact, the whole place was understated, Crump no doubt was a Protestant. The course appeared fair, with large fairways and greens but boy if you strayed from the righteous path well you will be like a sinner in the hands of an angry God, as all forms of torement await your transgressions. Amen

The best golf course on the planet - hands down. Don't ever turn out the opportunity to go if it presents itself - it would be the biggest mistake of your life. I would LOVE to see the pros play it. Seeing them have to hack out of the Devil's #*%! on #10 or the cactus in the bunker right of the #18 green would be pricelss!

Greatest Course on the Planet

Everything about this place exceeds expectations. It is the greatest golf experience one could ever hope to have. Golf there, stay at one of the cottages, eat a great meal, and see why most everyone feels PV is the best, #1 course in the world.

Best place I have ever played. (have playerd 60 of the top 100 so lots to compare). Impeccably maintained, beautiful greens and hilarious caddies (provided you aren't full of yourself). Food is excellent and the cabins are terrific. Biggest driving range I have ever seen.

ARE YOU THERE?

HOLES2,5,10,13,14,15 LOOK LIKE REALLY GOOD GOLF HOLES.EVERYBODY RAVES ABOUT IT WORLDWIDE.LET'S SEE SOME LIMITED PLAY ON IT ON TV LIKE THE 1962 LITTLER- B. NELSON MATCH. AFTER VIEWING OAKMONT OPEN, THE GUESS HERE IS THAT THE PROS WOULD SMOKE THIS LAYOUT.

If you call it "the Valley" then you haven't played Pine Valley. I've played it, I've walked the Crump, and neither ever gets old. Each time there you discover something new. #12 is the only weak spot, and it's an average hole. The other 17 holes are all masterpieces.

Just the best overall golf experience there is. An utterly fantastic collection of holes...heck the short course itself it awesome! PV is in a class by itself..it well deserves to be #1 in the world!

This course looks sensational!
I live in the UK, does anyone know how one would go about trying to get a tee time here?

Cheers
Chris

Absolutely breathtaking! This place has the beauty of Cypress Point, the ambiance of Merion, and the shot value of Leo J Martin.

Would love to give a special guy the experience of a lifetime to play this course. How can I make it happen ?

If you voted anything less than 5 stars, you haven't played the Valley.

Now this is golf

Perfection in every way !
