Recent Golf Course Reviews

Monday, August 06, 2007

We were excited to come up to Murphy to play this course as our local one was closed to a tournament we weren't playing in. It looked great in the pictures and we really should of paid attention to the previous reviewers comments, but, alas, we didn't.

Rolling up to the parking lot the course looked promising. The advertisement for the lounge and restaurant looked welcoming. Although the pro shop was bare necessities with the usual logo shirts, the guy behind the desk was friendly enough and got us started on the first tee, letting us go off a good 20 minutes early.

It all when downhill from there though, literally and figuratively. The tee boxes were a joke, some of them weren't even level. One of the tee boxes, 3 foot x 4 foot had tall grasses growing up in the front of it, so that I actually had to go out into the course and tee up. Others had no grass or were rock hard.

The fairways were so rough and not taken care of that they might as well not marked off fairways. What should of been rough was nothing more than crabgrass and weeds. The greens were either threadbare or muddy or had so many ruts and mower wheel ruts that we could barely putt. Not to mention no real walk ups to the greens.

Out of 18 holes, we counted 3 greens that were playable with only one or two bare spots, and a handful of tee boxes that you didn't have to worry about your driver getting caught in the grasses. It is a real shame that the owners don't take care of this course as it could be a real nice mountain course with such hilly holes that it's quite a challenge.

Even though the greens fees were only $33 which included a cart, I would give this course a GREAT BIG PASS!!!! Don't even bother, save your money and your game!!! There's too many other ones nearby that HAVE to be in better shape than this one.

good layout, poor maintenance

Cherokee Hills is a deceiving course. As you drive by, the fairways appear to be lush and green. The reason for that is because they are seldom mowed. The course is not seeded with typical golf course grasses, it has what I would call "pasture grass". Even when mowed short it is difficult to get a good lie, as the ball typically sinks in the listless grass. The greens are slow. Mostly because they are not mowed regularly. Several greens burn up every summer and become crusty... imagine putting on top of a burnt pizza. The tee boxes are uneven and often have muddy spots on them. The pro shop is a joke and the restaurant forgetable. The layout is good... if Wells & West (the owners) would put some money into the course and improve the conditioning, it could be a fantastic place to play. But that will likely never happen. Leave this one OFF your must play list.
