Club is under new ownership and is in great shape. The old reviews should be removed as they no longer apply. Great clubhouse, practice facility and world class golf course. One of the best in Arizona.

I stumbled across the Stone Canyon website the other day, where it says "Arizona"s Finest Private Golf Community". I had a chuckle at that sweeping statement, and found my way here to weigh in.
As both reviewers said, this club is reportedly teetering on the edge of despair in 2011... Tucson is not the wealthiest city in the world, and in the current economic climate I suspect they are having a tough time finding (and keeping) members. It is a shame, as this club has the most beautiful location I have seen in Arizona- the rock-covered mountains around the course are breathtaking and truly amazing. I have yet to see a more gorgeous piece of land for a golf course, even in Hawaii or on the ocean in California. The course itself, though very nice, is somewhat disappointing. As eejohn mentioned the designer flubbed up some of the holes- some feel awkward and somewhat contrived. Additionally, there are some horrible water features. There is a huge Trump-esque fake waterfall next to one of the greens- something you would expect to find in front of a casino in Las Vegas. Definitely the cheesiest thing I have seen on a golf course in Arizona. There is a lake or two on other holes, something I have always felt is out of place on a dry desert course which is already penal for any missed shot. Like Estancia in Scottsdale, this is an example of the designer failing to maximize on the incredible potential of the land. I would rank this golf course in the top 5 in Arizona, but would not give it top honors.
One item of note- I was very disappointed by the practice facility. It was not in very good shape, the balls were pretty ratty, the sandtraps were nearly sandless... something the club could fix easily w/ a little cash.
The small "temporary" clubhouse is ok... for now. The fitness facility is very nice, with good locker rooms and a passable set of equipment.
I like the eejohn review- he is balanced accurate in his statements. Smitty19 sounds like a member who had a had a bad experience... though there is a kernel of truth in what he says.
I would strongly recommend anyone try to play this course if they can- the scenery alone is worth it!

I didn't find the course or operations quite as disappointing as the previous review. I would agree that if you were to consider becoming a member, in depth due dilligance would be required. I was surprised to see no clubhouse after 10 years of operations and I did find the head person a little to "gushy" for me and somewhat unbelievable, but he loves his golf course. Beyond that, the rest of the staff I came accross were first class and very helpful and professional. Let's talk golf course, probably one of the most scenic in all of Arizona. I would say the mainenance could use some additional attention, but heck, this year the weather has been very tough to work with. Morrish did a pretty darn good job of designing, but I did find some areas on particular holes where he definately missed not having Weiscoff around to make sure he didn't make mistakes. I thought #15 could have been much better planned and designed.

All in all, a great golf course, one I would really like to play again. Don't know that I would want to be a member, but would sure like to be a guest several times.

Please be carefull before buying into this golf course, do your research. You have to ask yourself, after 11 years, why no clubhouse and only 160+/- members. The original developer RAN from this project and GAVE the money sucking project to the current owner. He is feeding it every month, how long is that going to go on. Once he gives in, it will be dumped on the members. The old saying "You know how to tell he is lying? His lips are moving", applies to the entire management and sales force. This development under it's current ownership and management is a sham. As previously said, if the original developer ran from this development, shouldn't you too? Beautiful scenery, terrible maintenance and operations lying director of golf. This could easily be the worse value in the Southwest. The dues have been increased 120% in 10 years without a clubhouse. This is a figure that can not be supported other than because of pure greed. If you are thinking of joining PLEASE read the escrow agreement that states how your "deposit" is to be disbursed. Also, be sure to evaluate if in the event you decide to leave, will you ever get your money back. The answer is NO, NO, NO. With the four for one ratio (4 developer memberships then one re-sale membership comes off the list) if you were number 21 on the sales list (which would be the number you would get today) they would have to sell 84 memberships before you would get your money back. They average selling net less than 6 memberships per year. I would highly encourage you to visit this property, play this course, but under any circumstances, do not buy in this failing property.
