I played this course, last Saturday, for the Varian Medical Systems Annual Tournament for employees, friends and families. The greens on this course are slick as greased lightening. I had heard from the pro at the Fremont Park Golf Course 9-hole that Monarch Bay had a history of trouble with the grass because of the salty sea breeze but recently had a grass expert fix the problem. Wow, was he ever right. And the scenery on the course was phenominal, with Bay Area marshland on one side and the Bay on the other, with a view of San Francisco and the Bay Bridge from the Southeast and the Penninsula and the San Mateo Bridge from the Northeast. The most amazing event was a fox, who walked right up to the side of our golfcart and posed for a few pictures. I suppose he gets plenty to eat out there, with all the birds and golfers. Nice good ole boys in the shop with a grill and pro shop, as well as driving range, putting and chipping areas. Crazy as we were, we started the tournament in the rain but it died off and left us with a nice day of golf, after the opening tournament challenges (putting and chipping competitions). A gem in the middle of the Bay. I am an average golfer of several years but my friend from work was a beginner and was happy (it was a best ball tournament so play went along just fine). Because of the early rain, we were almost the only ones on the course, though we filled it out pretty well.

Played today and have to say it was a REALLY nice day. Steady breeze made club selection a bit more tricky, but overall not a huge issue. Very unique bunkers (very old world style) with bunkers in the middle of fairways.. and they can be DEEP. I thankfully stayed clear of them all day. Very nice greens, excellent fairways, good marking. ALSO VERY, VERY nice staff. Only a few holes with water (OK by me!) Great views, very reasonable, very playable, etc. Pretty busy place because this is a great place to play!

Great selection of tee boxes (SEVEN!) So, great for high and low handicappers alike.

Great course. Bunkers surrounded every green, and if you're not too good out of the sand and you get in these bunkers, you'll have a long day. I was in the bunker probably 6-7 times the first time I played here.

Also, the scenery is awesome, as you are sitting right near the Bay, although it does cause a bit of a wind. I was hitting all my short irons too short because the wind was catching them...

The course plays longer than it looks, so don't be deceived by the links style openness of the course. It'll be longer than you think. That's why the numerous yardage markers come in handy!

Well marked and fair golf course with beautiful views of the bay and SF. The location on the bay makes the wind a factor on many holes and causes the course to play longer and with more difficulty than it first appears. Also, adding to the difficulty is a smart design that leverages bunkers and awkward approaches that require you to think through most holes.

Nice facilities, reasonable greens fees and an absence of the large hills on many other regional courses make this a nice option in the bay area for golfers of all skill levels.

We were fortunate to play here with the weather being uncertain... that pretty much left the course to ourselves. The condition of the course was fair because there was alot of rain. Overall a great value in the East Bay. Fair test of golf but can be tough if you get in the bunkers.

Very open but plays long.Add at least a full star on the difficulty when the winds pick up which is every afternoon.I've only played it in the morning.Good view of Bay and SF on a few holes.Nice Course.I think it's a little pricey for what it is though.Especially on weekends.

Great golf course. I love how much yardage markers they have. It's much easier to play golf when you know exactly how far out you are from the pin. Well kept greens and fairways. This course could be really hard on a windy day...

One of the best values in the bay area. Great layout and views from most of the course, and fairly well maintained, considering it's a lower cost public course. Nice practice facilities.

One word, "Windy" and that wind makes this course challenging. The price is also very good and the maintenance is above average. They have a pretty decent driving range too.

Beautiful, windy, and flat but challenging
