Great course.

My wife and I, along with her brother and his wife played the Tanglewood Championship course on a nice comfortable Monday morning. The course plays to a par 70 and has four sets of tees with the tips being at 7,100 yards. There are also tees set up for 6,600 (blues) and 6,000 yards (whites). The course scorecard says the red tees are 5,100 yards, but they must have recently shortened them, because some of the red tee markers were placed much closer to the holes than what the scorecard said.

The course, which used to host a regular Seniors Tour event and hosted the PGA Championship in 1974, features lots and lots of bunkers, which makes playing this course a real challenge. Some of the holes have water in play. The course itself was in excellent condition. The greens, fairways and the approximately 100 bunkers were all in great shape.

The cost was very reasonable, especially by New York standards where yours truly lives. We paid $38 for a weekday round with cart.

Our foursome played in just over 4 hours. We had hardly any wait and the twosome behind us did not wait very long for us to clear. I understand though that this course gets busy on weekends and a round can take much longer.

The staff we encountered were quite friendly. The starter knew we were from out of town and when she found a yardage book somewhere on the course, she drove it over and gave it to us. That was very nice.

In summary - a great course at a nice price and a recommended play if you are in the Winston-Salem area.

Have played here the last two years. Great course. To me this is 5* ALL THE WAY if for no other reason than it is $17 to walk 18 or $28 to ride 18 after 3pm and this is a course where they once played a MAJOR. Requires length if you play from the tips and the ability to work the ball. Tons of sand most of which was in great shape and tricky greens. Speaking of the greens they could have been in better shape but to play a track that the likes of Nicklaus, Palmer, Trevino and Snead once played that is a muny that anyone can play I do not think it can be beat!!!

The tee boxes, fairways and grounds were in good shape. The greens were the worst I have ever played on. I don't know what happened to them, but we were shocked to say the least. The sand traps were also in poor condition. We drove 50 minutes expecting to play on a championship caliber course only to be disappointed.
