Wellshire is the best municipal course in Denver in my opinion in regards to course design, conditions, & amenities. You're not going to get around in 4 hrs especially on a weekend, but for a public course the pace is usually decent. The course is a not extremely long, but is still a good challenge so with the correct expectations you should have a great time.
I just had to chime in and write a review of this course. The people who have reviewed before me must have no idea who Donald Ross is, his importance to US course design, or how lucky we are to be able to play a Ross course in Colorado usually for under $50! Just a classic layout that is still relevant and challenging today because of small greens, many of which are elevated relative to the fairway and green surrounds. I have played a few times when the greens were playing very firm and fast and it was tricky to get even well struck approach shots to hold the green. Yes that can be frustrating, but I just chalk it up to part of the challenge. Several holes have gorgeious views of the mountains, but keep in mind the course is tucked in to a densely populated area so there are houses along many holes and also main roads border a couple. Yes you may get some cars honking at you while teeing off on 13 and 18, but who cares! I agree that it would be nice if the City of Denver would put more dollars into maintenance, but that would likely just result in higher greens fees. I have played many of the top rated public courses in Colorado: The Broadmoor, Red Sky Ranch, Lakota Canyon, Fossil Trace, Redlands Mesa, etc. Although Wellshire doesn't make any of those lists it has a character and soul that none of those others do. If you are a fan of golf course architecture or just love classic older design courses this is a must play!
