Kapalua and Lahaina Golf, Maui - Hawaii
A bit north of Lahaina (approximately 10 miles), the 23,000-acre Kapalua Plantation property is the site of several destination resorts. Possible accommodations consist of the lovely Kapalua Bay Hotel & Villas and the magnificent Ritz-Carlton Kapalua. Two of the three golf courses are Arnold Palmer designs. The Bay layout, parring at 72, stretches 6,600/6,051/5,124 yards. The Village Links reaches out 6,632/6,001/5,134 yards with a par of 71. Both courses take full advantage of the natural terrain, rolling hills, lava outcroppings and the spectacular views offered from elevations up to 750 feet above the sea. Water only comes into play on four holes of the Village layout and on six of the Bay Course.
The Plantation Course
is high on slopes of the old pineapple plantation, affording panoramic views of the
ocean. Designed by the team of Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, it opened in mid-1991. They may call Mr.
Crenshaw "Gentle Ben," but his course is anything but gentle. Parring at 73 (the ladies' par is 75), it reaches
out a monstrous 7,263/6,547/5,627 yards. The opening hole will more than get your attention. A par 4, this
gem measures 473 yards - but what the heck, the 18th is a 663-yard par 5. There is a restaurant adjacent to
the main pro shop of the Bay Course called The Grill&Bar. Not only are the food and the service outstanding,
but it's a wonderful place for people watching. Make reservations early, as it is one
busy place.
