The Phoenix, Arizona area is often referred to as the "Valley of the Sun" and is home to over 200 golf courses. There are courses available for all skill and budget levels. The variety of courses, the climate and the world class golf courses make this area a great destination for golfers.

Geography

The greater Phoenix area includes the towns of Phoenix, Scottsdale and Mesa. Both Scottsdale and Mesa have grown tremendously in population and popularity. Because of the desert location, this area has hot, dry days with cooler night temperatures.

Types

The Phoenix area has several different types of golf courses. The city owns two top municipal courses, Cave Creek Golf Course and Papago Golf Course. There are also many resort golf courses that often require overnight lodging at the resort to play on the courses. In addition, there are a number of excellent public courses in the area, such as of Encanto Golf Courses and Foothills Golf Club.

Features

The Troon North Golf Club usually tops the list of favorite Phoenix golf courses; there are two courses, the Monument and the Pinnacle. If you can only play one of the courses, play the Monument course. Another course that you won't want to miss is the Dinosaur Mountain Course at the Gold Canyon Golf Club. This course provides dramatic scenery and many elevation changes.

Time Frame

Because this area is a well-known golf destination, the prices can be very high during the winter months. The courses can also be more crowded during this time. If you are visiting during the winter, be sure to make tee times far in advance of your golf outing. You may want to consider playing the Phoenix courses during the fall and spring months. Be sure to ask about afternoon or twilight rates to save money.

Benefits

One of the benefits to playing golf in the Phoenix area is the clustering of courses. Although a few of the courses are in the outlying areas of the cities, they are all within a short drive of each other. And because of the moderate climates, you can also play golf year round. The nearby Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport provides non-stop service from many cities and makes the area easily accessible.

Tips

If you are planning a trip in November, be sure to call ahead and ask about the golf course maintenance schedule. Many courses perform routine maintenance tasks during this time.

Golf Shoe Design Changes and Options
by Staff
As the '90s drew to a close, the footwear segment of the golf equipment market was fueled by the need to develop unique outsole and spike configurations. The demand for traction enhancement stemmed from the golfing world's switch from traditional steel spikes to alternative cleats. Alternative spike manufacturers suddenly appeared to outnumber shoe manufacturers. Spikeless and spiked combination outsoles existed side by side, leaving the consumer confused as to what worked best.
