Phoenix, Arizona is home to many luxury golf resorts that will both challenge and pamper any level of player. Although golf is the main attraction at these resorts, you will also find additional recreation options such as swimming, hiking and spa services.

The Facts

The Phoenix area hosts five AAA 5 diamond golf resorts. The Boulders Resort and the Camelback Inn offer luxury resorts with challenging golf courses. Another AAA 5 diamond resort is the Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at North Troon. When you stay at this resort, you can play both the Monument and Pinnacle courses. In addition, you receive guest privileges at the Troon North clubhouse. The Fairmont Scottsdale Princess and the Phoenician resorts are also given top honors by the AAA.

Geography

The greater Phoenix area includes the towns of Phoenix, Scottsdale and Mesa. You can fly into the conveniently located Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Since the area is a desert, many of the courses offer beautiful and unique views of the Sonora desert and surrounding mountains.

Benefits

One of the benefits of visiting a golf resort in the Phoenix area is the proximity of the other courses. With over 200 courses in the area, it's easy to visit courses outside your resort. The concierge at your resort can arrange tee times at other courses for you. Also, keep in mind that many of the resorts have reciprocal agreements with nearby resorts that allow you to play on neighboring courses.

Considerations

Because Phoenix is a very popular winter golf destination, you may want to plan your visit for another time of the year. By visiting in the fall or spring, you can still enjoy moderate temperatures, but the crowds and prices are lower. If you visit in the summer, be prepared for the very high temperatures experienced in the desert during the day. Also, because many of the resorts are classed as "luxury resorts" and the courses are championship courses, the prices for accommodations and green fees can be very high.

Identification

When selecting a Phoenix golf resort, you should consider carefully all of your vacation needs. For example, if you want unique accommodations, check into the Camelback Inn and stay in adobe casitas. If onsite dining is important, make sure that the resort offers a wide variety of options. In addition, be sure to ask about dress codes and other recreation activities.

Tips

If you are unable to bring your own golf clubs, most resorts allow you to rent them.

Why Graphite Shafts are Becoming More Popular than Steel
by Staff
According to the Darrell Survey, more than 90 percent of wood shafts on the PGA Tour, LPGA Tour and Champions Tour are graphite, while steel shafts in irons still remains the choice of most professional golfers. When it comes to recreational golfers, the stats are probably even more skewed toward graphite, and for good reason. Graphite shafts simply offer a wider range of performance characteristics and can allow golfers to achieve driving distances they never dreamed possible. But what makes one shaft different from another?
