Golf is normally a game of adjustments, surprises and execution of difficult shots. Holes are usually designated as par 3, par 4 or par 5. The par 3 holes are designed so the golfer can reach it with his tee shot and then take two putts to sink the ball in the hole. The par 4 gives a golfer a tee shot, a fairway shot and two putts, while a par 5 gives a golfer a tee shot, two fairway shots and two putts. Most par 5s are in the 450-to-550-yard range. However, there are several monster holes in various golf courses, including two that are 800 yards or more, according to Forbes Traveler.

Here are the five longest holes in the world:

  • No. 1 —841-yard hole, Locust Grove, VirginiaThe 12th hole at Meadow Farms Golf Course is truly a monster. This 841-yard hole is listed as a par 6, but it takes a long and disciplined hitter to reach the green in four shots or less. This hole is listed in the "Guinness Book of World Records" as the longest hole in the world.
  • No. 2 — 800-yard hole, Sebring, FloridaThe sixth hole at the Spring Lake Golf Resort is a long, depressing and difficult par 6. It is depressing because this overgrown giant comes midway through the front nine, meaning the golfer still has 12 holes to go before he finishes the round.
  • No. 3 — 777-yard hole, Post Falls, IdahoIdaho is not usually thought of as a golfer's destination spot, but the monster 9th hole at The Links Golf Course is a well-designed par 6 that an avid golfer will never forget.
  • No. 4 — 767-yard hole, Myrtle Beach, South CarolinaMyrtle Beach has long been known as a golfer's paradise with many difficult and beautiful golf holes. The finishing 18th at Farmstead Golf Links is a grueling par 6 that will test any golfer's ability to hit the ball with distance and accuracy.
  • No. 5 — 747 yard hole, Black Mountain, North Carolina747-yard hole, Naco, ArizonaThese two holes are tied for the fifth-longest holes in the golfing world. The 17th hole at the Black Mountain Golf Club is not only long but has many difficult lies and shots along the way. The 15th hole at Turquoise Valley offers the golfer the chance to unbutton his top two buttons and blast away at this beautiful and aptly named course.

Industry Experts Debate What Makes an Iron Easy to Hit
by Mike Chwasky
What makes an iron easy to hit? It's a question golfers and designers have been asking since the days of the Nicoll Cleek and Forrester Mashie. When it comes to drivers and woods, it's not nearly as mysterious. Big, light club heads, long graphite shafts and modern materials are easy to spot, and their functions are relatively obvious. With irons it's a different story. At first glance, most irons are almost indistinguishable from one another. Yes, some have longer blades or more offset, but for the most part, irons don't look that much different than they did 25 years ago.
