For those golfers who won't get to play in the British Open, The Royal Links Golf Club in Las Vegas is a welcome opportunity. The course was created from 11 different British Open rotation courses. In fact, two holes are from the 2008 British Open. However, this 18-hole course is only 9 miles from the Las Vegas strip. The course is popular for many golfers, including the famed Tiger Woods, who had a record game there in 2001.

History

The Royal Links Golf Club was initially built to offer something different to the area. Designer Dye International wanted to honor the history and tradition of the sport of golf, and included monuments throughout the course that present information about great moments in British Open history. In addition, a Champions Wall is located near the all-turf practice range. The wall honors Americans who have won the British Open.

Features

The links-style course has many holes familiar from the British Open. The famous "Road Hole," "Hell Bunker" and "Postage Stamp" from the old course at St. Andrews and from Royal Troon are all included. In addition, holes are recreated from Carnoustie, Turnberry, Royal Liverpool, Prestwick, Royal Lytham, Muirfield and Royal Birkdale.

An interesting feature of Royal Links is the opportunity it affords guests to engage the services of a professional forecaddie, which only adds to the Scottish theme of the course. These forecaddies can share the history of each hole, the location of the 108 pot bunkers and overall course information. Walking caddies are required for walking guests.

Function

A castle-style clubhouse also sits on the Royal Links property. Within the castle is a golf shop that was named one of America's 100 best by GolfWorld Business. The shop features apparel, equipment, art and collectibles Guests without gear can also rent Callaway clubs and FootJoy shoes.

In addition, the castle includes Stymie's Pub, a re-creation of an English-isle establishment. With antiques and traditional fare like fish, chips and bangers, this pub is quite authentic. An English-style call box is located on the 9th tee, allowing golfers to order lunch for pickup or to be delivered to them on the course.

Geography

The atmosphere of the Royal Links Golf Club makes it unlike any other in the Las Vegas area. While golfers can still enjoy a challenging game, when they step onto the property they feel as if they are in Scotland. The castle, the greenery, the bushes and the mountain views are quite breathtaking. Players often feel as if they're in another world when on the Royal Links course.

Expert Insight

The Royal Links Golf Club was voted "Best Course in Las Vegas" in the Review Journal's 2006 "Best of Vegas" poll. In addition, it was voted one of "America's Best Courses" by GolfWeek.

Resources

Royal Links is located only 20 minutes away from the Las Vegas strip.

Why Graphite Shafts are Becoming More Popular than Steel
by Staff
According to the Darrell Survey, more than 90 percent of wood shafts on the PGA Tour, LPGA Tour and Champions Tour are graphite, while steel shafts in irons still remains the choice of most professional golfers. When it comes to recreational golfers, the stats are probably even more skewed toward graphite, and for good reason. Graphite shafts simply offer a wider range of performance characteristics and can allow golfers to achieve driving distances they never dreamed possible. But what makes one shaft different from another?
