Located in the east side of Old Las Vegas, Desert Rose is only minutes away from the famous Strip. This public course will thrill you by the price it charges for a round of golf, and it will take you back before the advent of more modern stadium-designed courses. You can play this course for about $65 and club rental is a reasonable $30.

History

One of the first golf courses to be built in the Las Vegas area, "The Rose" was designed by Dick Wilson and Joe Lee, famous architects who were responsible for courses such as Bay Hill, Doral and Callaway Gardens. Opened in 1963, "The Rose" is known for being a mature layout that is suited to all golfers, regardless of ability.

Features

In addition to offering a jewel of a course, "The Rose" has a driving range as well as a pair of chipping greens where you can sharpen your game, and practice bunkers that simulate those on the course. If you are traveling light, "The Rose" will gladly rent top-of-the-line clubs and shoes for your round. When you make it off the 18th green, head to the Desert Rose Bar & Grill for libations and a wide variety of food selections.

Geography

"The Rose" is almost 6,600 yards long from the back tees, and is known for its narrow, well-manicured fairways and its challenging greens. At 605 yards, the fourth hole is the course's signature hole, a par-5 that boasts a tight fairway with out-of-bounds on its left and water to the right. Many a player began a "round of a lifetime" until this hole's treachery befell him. So both your skills and mental toughness will be challenged here.

Facts

Once owned by Jim Colbert, former PGA Tour player of the year, Desert Rose is now managed by Golf Enterprises, Inc. Each year, "The Rose" hosts the Clark County Amateur that counts PGA players Robert Gamez and Craig Barlow among its past winners.

Expert Insight

"The Rose" provides the golfer a memorable experience for which he will pay far less than he might elsewhere in Las Vegas. Many people returning to Las Vegas after having already played "The Rose" have a tee time already reserved to play the course again.

Golf Equipment Tip of the Day

Choose the Putter Designed for Your Golf Game
by Staff
If you've ever been humbled after having your stroke analyzed at one of those high-tech putting studios, you know why the adage "feel is not real" is, well, real. After all, when examined under a microscope, all the flaws of your stroke are magnified. Your path goes left, your clubface is open, you hit everything off the toe--the data doesn't lie and sometimes all that bad news is enough to make you want to impale your flat stick into the monitor. What's important to keep in mind, however, is that our strokes demand specific kinds of putters.
