Only 20 minutes from the famous Las Vegas Strip, Las Vegas Golf Club is a "must play" among the almost 60 golf courses in the area. For less than $100, you can play one of the true Las Vegas institutions. In fact, if you tee off after 1 p.m., the rates are as low as $39.

History

Built in 1945, Las Vegas Golf Club is the oldest course in Las Vegas Valley. Designed by Casey O'Callahan, this course may be a public facility, but its new clubhouse--and upgrades to the course itself--make it one of the true gems for the golfer to enjoy.

Features

Besides offering one of the most playable golf courses in the area, it is home to the Nike Golf Schools, where you can take a lesson or sign up for one of its many other learning opportunities. There is also a fully-equipped and lighted practice range, along with a clubhouse that contains one of the finest golf restaurants in the area.

Geography

The first three holes give you a good opportunity to start strong. The first hole is just over 300 yards and you can drive it with a good tee shot. The second is a short par-5 with a wide fairway, and the third is less than 100 yards long, but does require a well-hit wedge or 9-iron. There are only 30 sand traps on the course, and the greens are very accessible, though they do have some break. All in all, the Las Vegas Golf Club is very manageable and it's one of those rare courses that encourages you to play your best.

Facts

Las Vegas Golf Club is the home course of the SNGA's annual Las Vegas Amateur, a major event for which all the best players in Nevada convene.

Expert Insight

You should plan to play at least one round at the Las Vegas Golf Club. You might even get hooked by its fine condition and its variety, not to mention its affordability, and find time to play it one more time before leaving for home.

Industry Experts Debate What Makes an Iron Easy to Hit
by Mike Chwasky
What makes an iron easy to hit? It's a question golfers and designers have been asking since the days of the Nicoll Cleek and Forrester Mashie. When it comes to drivers and woods, it's not nearly as mysterious. Big, light club heads, long graphite shafts and modern materials are easy to spot, and their functions are relatively obvious. With irons it's a different story. At first glance, most irons are almost indistinguishable from one another. Yes, some have longer blades or more offset, but for the most part, irons don't look that much different than they did 25 years ago.
