Located in Henderson, Nevada, Desert Willow Golf Course is only about 25 miles from the Las Vegas Strip. Although it boasts some of the finest conditioning of golf courses in the area, its greens fees of $40 or less to play this executive course are among the lowest you'll find.

History

Opening with great fanfare in 1996, Desert Willow was designed by top golf architects Billy Casper and Greg Nash. It is an executive course where a player can finish 18 holes in a 3 1/2 hours, leaving plenty of time to roam the Strip or partake of the city's many other activities.

Geography

Nestled in the Black Mountains, Desert Willow boasts great views of Las Vegas Valley. Its fairways and greens are maintained meticulously, and it's lined with aged pines that make it unlike any other course in southern Nevada. It has 12 par 3s hole and six par 4s, and is both challenging and imminently playable at the same time. True to its name, gigantic willow trees dot the course.

Features

Besides having one of Las Vegas' premier layouts, Desert Willow also has a complete driving range and chipping and putting areas. If you're new to golf or a seasoned player, there are helpful instructors who can assist you with the game. In addition, the spectacular views attract many wedding receptions.

Facts

Since its opening, Desert Willow has been selected by "Vegas Golfer Magazine" as the best executive course in the valley for 2005 and 2006. In addition, it held the rank of top executive course in America in 2006, 2007, and 2008 as determined by "Golf Range Magazine."

Size

Desert Willow is almost 4,000 yards long from the back tees, but a more forgiving 3,100 yards from the front. In addition, it is the only golf course in Las Vegas that offers junior tees.

by Mike Chwasky
What makes an iron easy to hit? It's a question golfers and designers have been asking since the days of the Nicoll Cleek and Forrester Mashie. When it comes to drivers and woods, it's not nearly as mysterious. Big, light club heads, long graphite shafts and modern materials are easy to spot, and their functions are relatively obvious. With irons it's a different story. At first glance, most irons are almost indistinguishable from one another. Yes, some have longer blades or more offset, but for the most part, irons don't look that much different than they did 25 years ago.
