1919
Pebble Beach opened on February 22, 1919. It was designed by Douglas Grant and Jack Neville, whose main objective was to have as many holes along the shoreline as possible.
Early Tournaments
Pebble Beach quickly became known as an exceptional golfing venue and hosted its first major tournament in 1929--the U.S. Amateur. By 1947, it had become a regular stop on the professional tour, with an event hosted by celebrity Bing Crosby on the tour's western swing.
U.S. Open
In 1972, 1982, 1992 and 2000, Pebble Beach was the host course of the U.S. Open. Jack Nicklaus won the first one held there, while Tom Watson, Tom Kite and Tiger Woods, respectively, won the subsequent tournaments.
Rates
Green fees for 18 holes at Pebble Beach are $495, with a golf cart costing another $35. This makes Pebble Beach one of the most expensive golf venues in the entire world.
Holes
The longest par 5 on the course is the 14th hole at 572 yards. The longest par 4 is the 462-yard 9th hole, and the longest par 3 is the 201-yard 12th hole. The par 3 7th hole is a famous hole, where golfers hit from an elevated tee box onto the green below, with the Pacific Ocean in the background.
