What Is the Legal Length of the Longest Driver?

By Matt Manco

What Is the Legal Length of the Longest Driver?
The simple equation in distance is longer shaft equals faster swing speed, faster swing speed means more distance. This equation causes headaches among most amateurs by making them believe a longer shaft is better for them when in fact most touring pros play shorter shafts to improve their control.

Longest Legal Shaft

The U.S. Golf Association states a club shaft can be no longer than 48 inches for any club except a putter. The average off the rack driver has a 45-inch shaft.

Misconceptions

Despite an excepted standard of 45 inches, most touring professionals use shorter shafts or choke down on their driver. Many pros use longer shafts but even big hitters use a 44 1/2-inch shaft.

Pros and Cons

If driving accuracy is a strong point of your game, maybe you can afford the trade-off of losing 5 to 15 yards off the tee. Most golfers would gladly sacrifice a few yards for more balls on the fairway.

Your Perfect Length

Take an honest look at your game and decide the right length for you. During your next round keep track of fairways hit, then try choking down on your driver to see if your accuracy improves.

Refit Your Driver

Once you establish the perfect shaft length, take your driver to a PGA professional and have him cut down the length and possibly refit you with a new shaft.

Industry Experts Debate What Makes an Iron Easy to Hit
by Mike Chwasky
What makes an iron easy to hit? It's a question golfers and designers have been asking since the days of the Nicoll Cleek and Forrester Mashie. When it comes to drivers and woods, it's not nearly as mysterious. Big, light club heads, long graphite shafts and modern materials are easy to spot, and their functions are relatively obvious. With irons it's a different story. At first glance, most irons are almost indistinguishable from one another. Yes, some have longer blades or more offset, but for the most part, irons don't look that much different than they did 25 years ago.
