Pebble Beach Golf Course History
Pebble Beach Golf Course, located on the Monterey Peninsula in Pebble Beach, California, hugs the rugged coastline with breathtaking views of the ocean. It ranks as one of America's most spectacular golf courses.

History

Samuel F.B. Morse commissioned two amateur golfers, Jack Neville and Douglas Grant, with the task of designing a first-rate golf course to attract buyers to the Pebble Beach area. Pebble Beach Golf Links was opened on Feb. 22, 1919.

Features

Pebble Beach Golf Course features seven public and 18 private 18-hole golf courses. The four public courses owned by the Pebble Beach Co. are The Links at Spanish Bay, Spyglass Hill, Pebble Beach Golf Links and Del Monte Golf Course.

Significance

In 1926, Pebble Beach hosted its first professional golf tournament, the Monterey Peninsula Open. Three years later, the U.S. Amateur was played at Pebble Beach, marking the golf course's first major tournament.

Time Frame

The Bing Crosby National Pro-Am tournament began in 1947 at Pebble Beach. It is now known as the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, where the first three rounds are played in a round-robin format at Spyglass Hill, Poppy Hills and Pebble Beach Golf Courses.

Considerations

The U.S. Open has been played four times at Pebble Beach Golf Links. It will host the U.S. Open in 2010.

Fun Fact

Shortly after Pebble Beach Golf Links opened, Samuel Morse founded the Del Monte Properties Co. and purchased the Pebble Beach property.

Golf Equipment Tip of the Day

How to Give Your Golf Clubs a Tuneup
by John D. Tudor
During the course of a year, an avid golfer's clubs are swung anywhere between 18,000 and 20,000 times, carried or hauled on a golf cart for about 3,000 miles, roughly handled another 1,000 times, tossed about the trunk of a car for over 20,000 miles and swung in a variety of less-than-perfect situations involving low-hanging branches, rocks and hardpan. Obviously, the stress and strain a golf club endures goes far beyond that for which it's designed, so now is the perfect time to examine your woods and irons and, if necessary, get them back into playing shape.
