Bobby Jones was born on St. Patrick's Day in Atlanta to Robert, an attorney, and Clara Jones. At 6, his family moved near East Lake Country Club in Atlanta.
Early Success
Jones won a tournament the Atlanta Athletic Club junior title at 9 against a16-year-old opponent. At 13 and 14 years old, he won two tournaments.
U.S. Open
In 1923, Jones won the U.S. Open at Inwood Country Club in New York, his first major. He would win the title again in 1926, 1929 and 1930.
1926
In 1926, Jones won the U.S. and British Open championships, the only one to win both tournaments in the same year at the time. He was honored with a ticker-tape parade on Broadway.
1930
In 1930, Jones made history by becoming the first person to win all four grand slams in one year. He retired that year at 28 and practiced law in Atlanta.
Augusta National
Jones helped design Augusta National Golf Club, which opened in 1933. The Masters tournament, one of the four majors, is played at this venue.
