Backswing Length for Golf Chipping Exercises

By Kevin D. Boehler

Backswing Length for Golf Chipping Exercises
Knowing how far back you should swing when chipping is the most important aspect of learning consistent distance control. Thinking of your arm that is closest to the target--left arm for right-handed golfers--as the hour hand on a clock will greatly help visualize the length of your backswing.

Function

On the range, find the average distance you hit balls from each hour (7 to 11) on the clock.

Benefits

Using a clock as a visualization for the back swing will make chipping to certain distances easy and consistent.

Time Frame

Finding the distances from each hour on the clock should take no more than 2 hours if you hit 5 to 10 balls for each position.

Timing

Practice swinging with the same tempo on each chip for the best consistency.

Famous Ties

Almost every tour pro uses this method for distances inside 100 yards, and Dave Pelz writes about the method in his book "The Short Game Bible."

Clubfitting Is Important, but Set Makeup Can Be Critical
by Mike Chwasky
When most golfers think of customizing their clubs, they immediately think about fitting. And while determining the right loft, lie, length and grip size, among other things, is critical to getting optimal performance from a set of clubs, set makeup can be equally, if not more, important. Basically, the days of eight irons, two wedges, three woods and a putter are over, and opening your mind--and bag--to new ideas is a great way to improve your game and your scores.
