i have been playing golf all winter in the cold of southern new jersey.i have no handicapp yet but i was a consistant 100 to 102 player at my country club.i never played competitive golf and thats why i never had a handicapp. since retiring from the state of new jersey, one of my goals was to play competitive golf in the mens association at white oaks country club in newfield new jersey. i have dedicated my self this winter to get my scores down to the eighties and for four rounds i have achieved that goal. yesterday i went out and of course told my 24 year old son that i was gonna whip him by 10 or 15 strokes..don you know that i shot a 105, 3 strokes higher then my average.. i couldent get off the Tee or make a putt. am i fooling myself into believing that i can consistantly be in the eighties? am i just a 100 shooter?anyway, i will be back out there working on my goals. one thing that i always tell my son is to play the whole round out so that you know your true score.i guess i have to take some of my own advice and keep on swingin...i need some words of encourgament right now.

There are times when it seems nothing will improve your game, But that is only the "Golf Gods" playing with your mind.
Don't tell your son what you're gonna do, just watch his face when you do it!
The game has a habit of giving a little then taking it back. Remember what you did well and try to repeat it.
Good Hitting.

My best nine ever (after 25+ years of playing) was a 3 under on a par 35 course. I followed it up with a second nine at +10. My normal handicap on that course fluxuates during the season between 12 and 6. Such is golf.

Hi Sarg !
There probably isn't much this 47-year-old rookie (that has only been playing since June 2007) can tell you. But in the short time I have been playing I’ve have the pleasure of being associated with some well-seasoned players, some players that have been playing for years and years, and some golfers that make me feel REAL GOOD about my game.

If the well-seasoned golfers are any indication, it appears I have a lifetime ahead of me of good days and bad days and sometimes those days may just be a day apart with an 89 one day and a 105 the next, which brings me to the sad realization “The guys we see on TV each weekend are truly gifted in the game.”

Of all the things that "I have to keep in mind" when I “do the dance” some days it appears “I Have Forgotten Something”. (like maybe my brain?) – Other days I find the highly ridiculed John Daly my greatest inspiration with his motto: “Grip It & Rip It” - because it almost seems when I don’t have to think about what I’m doing, and just do it without a lot of thought – I do good. (better) ((best)) . . .

(I guess this rookie was too longwinded)

Part 2

So, If I were to offer some words of encouragement, I would share this with you . . .

My Rookie Rule #1: Play the course not the guy in the cart beside of you.
My Rookie Rule #2: Have Bigg Funn While Playing The Course and don’t burden yourself with the added pressure of having to prove yourself with a verbal challenge/goal – just relax, enjoy the day, smile and simply “show him” next time.
I also liked Thistle’s rendition of this too “Don't tell your son what you're gonna do, just watch his face when you do it!”
My Rookie Rule #3: (i’m told) “Keep Your Head Down”, and then I was admonished by “H.L.” a “ranger” at Henry River Golf Course in Hickory NC, that if I don’t, when I look up too soon all I’ll see is a poorly hit ball. . . . (and that’s really nothing worth looking at anyway) so “Keep Your Head Down” he said . . .

Of course Sarg, I was wondering . . . Even if you shot a 105, did you still achieve your 10 stroke goal/challenge ??

“Grip It & Rip It” &
“Keep On ~ Keep’n On” !!
