Hey all,
I lift weights about 5 days a week. Im also trying to improve my golf game alot this year(playing 2+ days a week and driving range 3+ days a week). I notice that whenever I do deadlifts as a lower back exercise, for the next few days I cannot even hit a ball. Im typically a pretty good iron player, never any shanks, my only miss hits are hooks or pull/hooks in the worst case scenario. However, having doing deadlifts 2 days prior, I cant get the ball off the ground(weird contact shooting the ball off to the right very low). This is atleast the second time Ive noticed this happening after deadlifts. I feel as if maybe my lower back is so tight that I cannot make a full turn perhaps, and I also feel like Im popping my body up for some reason to compensate. Very strange though, because I typically struggle with my Driver, and on these days when my back is tight and I cannot hit my irons, I tend to hit my Driver well. Maybe it is limiting my turn and helping me in the case of the driver.

Just a shot in the dark, has this happend to anyone else?

Any other insight welcomed and appreciated.

Regards,
John

john, i am similar to you in the fact that i lift or workout and often have tightness in my lower back. what i have found is that might tight back limits my hip rotation, therefore promoting an inside swing path which forces me to 'flip' my hands at the ball. my recommendation to you would be: stretch your hamstrings and the front of your hips before playing (and after working out) and focus on rotating your left hip hard to start your downswing. This in theory should bring the path of the club back down the correct plane and allow your body to rotate thru the ball, rather than your hands. hope that helps!

In golf the timing between your brain and body are critical. Heavy
lifting and golf do not go together. If you must lift then stick to the driving range.

Heh. Sadly true. If you're muscles are tired and rebuilding they are probably mis-firing and causing inconsistencies. Bulk up in the off months, and maintain it with higher rep maintenance workouts in the peak of golf season.
