I'm new to this forum, but have been on Golflink a few months. Been hacking for years, finally in Feb 08 the wife bought me lessons. I've been taking lessons or hitting the range, or playing a round every week since then. (Hit the range today in light rain, obsession??)I'm shooting in the mid-90's now.
Anyway - I have a long thumb (left hand) interlocking grip, but it's not been very consistent for me. I've read the tips here on Golflink that show a short thumb. (Overwhelmingly it seems) Since I am learning as much of a proper setup, swing, etc as I can I want a proper grip. Even if I need to change it - I'll get over it.
I also can't tell the exact spot to put the butt of the club between my pinky finger and my palm.
So here's my questions:
1. Long left hand thumb or short thumb?
2. Interlocking grip or pinky overlap? (Again, I'm willing to change)
3. Does the butt of the club fit at the crease at the base of my pinky where it attaches to my palm OR further down in my palm where my first crease is just below where my fingers attach. (This second area is the "hinge" point/crease you get when you close your knuckles. i.e. with fingers straight out, close them with your knucles towards your palm - this is the second crease I'm questioning.)
My pro says "what's comfortable" - sorry, my hands and grip can't stay consistent using my current grip setup.
Thanks

here is a random but true story. I have a client that is obsessed with golf and he noticed that my thumb has a major hook to it. He then says "You have potential to be a great golfer, all the great golfers have hooked thumbs, it allows better leverage, control blah, blah, blah" I didn't know what he was talking about, i thought everyones thumb bent back (picture someone hitchiking") I told my girlfriend about it and she said "no, i have a straight thumb" She stuck her hand up and sure enough, her thumb is in a deadstraight line. If your thumb doesn't hook, perhaps you CANT put it short on the club. But for me I interlock with the thumb short. I used to ahve a baseball 10 fingered grip because I didn't know anybetter.
The club should sit in the crease between your palm and pinky and the shaft should run along that line.

appreciate the comment CP, did the check and I have a "Hooked" thumb. Thus I can make a short thumb. I'll give the grip a try. I've toyed around today with a short thumb one finger overlap grip and if I change that feels most comfortable. Thanks
