I'd like to get my nephew a set of golf clubs. He's expressed an interest in golf and has been to the driving range a few times and so far is really enjoying it, but he doesn't have his own set. Any ideas on a good set of beginner clubs?

is this a young kid, teenager, young adult? size is going to be the biggest issue here.

thats good so he's already of a pretty normal adult height so you shouldn't need to get him smaller clubs or have lie angles adjusted, at least not while he's starting out. I would say look for a decent set of used name brand clubs or look into buying him a set of clones from a place like gigagolf.com, linksmangolf.com or diamondtourgolf.com I bought my first set from linksman and they play great. prob a million posts on here of me praising clones and duckybutters going against them. The biggest pro is you can get a good set of new clubs for about 150 bucks, the cons is that they won't have much resale value but tney are a starter set that quite frankly will play as well or better than any name brand set out there.

I agree, try to find a used set of brand name...my first set of clubs was an entire set (Driver-PW) from TourTechnology...played them for a few years and was amazed at the difference of playability between them and my new set of Taylormade's now. Should have gotten a good set of game improvement irons in the first place.

one last thing. one of the major issues with cheapo starter sets sold in places like WalMart isn't necessarily the quality of the set, it's the fact that often times they don't make it clear what the shaft flex is. Most golfers in the know will tell you that the most important club attribute for anyone is going to be the shaft flex. Most of the sets in WalMart are going to cater to the masses and the types of people that shop in walmart and are probably going to be regular flex or even worse, Senior flex. A young 17 year old even with bad swing mechanics is probably going to swing the club pretty fast. Not to mention young people almost always try to kill the ball starting out so even if they don't swing incredibly fast they probably have a really fast tempo. Look for a set that has Stiff Flex shafts.

Clones play as well or BETTER than the name brands they copy! Stop it. I would have been ok with clones a good for the money or a nice option for new player, but play better than a name brands your just calling me out now.

I would love to see robot tests with name brand and clones. Problem is that you'll never see that test done because the ad money that the name brands spend. but I'm not kidding you ducky. First of all, I think in the past you advised people to at least buy a name brand like snake eyes from golfsmith. A lot of snake eyes clubheads are knockoffs as well. But since they are sold in a major retail outlet people view them as more legitimate. I'll fight this battle to the death, if you don't skimp on the quality of the shaft, knockoffs will play as well as their namebrand counterparts.

You are correct that you need more than a great head to make a great club, the shaft and even the right grip make all the difference in the world. Companies like pinseeker and tourmade give people the chance to buy the newest style of clubs at a discount price, that far I can easily go. I get my clubs re gripped and re shafted by shops that build rather than buy clubs those guys are golfers and care about what the build but even they will tell you to stick to name brand shafts and grips when possible. A person can play with just about anything when they are playing well, but when you dont have your best game with you, the last thing you want to worry about is equipment and thats why name brands clubs from companies with track records people trust will always sell best.
