I have been playing golf for like a year now probably and have always had somewhat of a problem with my driver. Recently I finally broke down and got a lesson while I was on vacation. I can finally hit my driver about 250 and it seems pretty straight (usually about 3-5 yards to the right or left when the ball comes down).
Now I can't wait to get on the course and try this out and hopefully have a good day, however my concern is that I have only been using range balls. That slight shift to the right or left worries me.
I'm curious if using a regular ball will cause me to all of a sudden develop a horrible slice or even a hook and cause me to throw my driver back in my bag.
I also found someone near my home who sells a dozen used titleist pro-v1's for $5, so I bought a bag of those. I'm hoping they won't kill me. Anyone have any insight for me?

Might be thinking about the wrong thing. Just focus on taking what you learned to the course and develop confidence with it. Once it becomes more habitualized (that a word?), then you might want to start nuancing things with ball type. Specifically, no, the ball will not cause erratic flight unless it is faulty. If it helps your confidence, ask the pro if you can borrow a couple of range balls starting out. I'm open to other's input on this, but at your stage of development, I just don't think ball type is that big a factor. PS: Curious to know what you learned which helped.

Sell the proV1's and buy some low spin soft skin balls like these, callaway big bertha blue. top flight gammer or D2 maxfli noodle+ wilson staff 50 Nike power/soft all under 20.00 and will play more rounds than any 40.00 ball... these balls will go further that that titleist and you can still stop them on a dime. don't be fooled by hype and AD's...
tonight again I found 6 ProV1's off the fairway under 220yds. the reason there the #1 selling ball, cause guys lose them so much....lol

Heh alright, thanks for the tip.
As for what the pro told me, it was basically that my grip was wrong and my hand wasn't turning over enough through impact causing me to slice. Also, my club was leading my hands to the ball. I guess at this point I'm just going to have to see what happens and hope I can transfer the range shots to the course.

I will never without seeing ones swing suggest what might help. but as for a ball to play with, that's a different story, cause at this stage of your game you do not need 45.00 balls to play with unless you feel you play better with them. because confidence if everything the rest is easy...lol

Yea well I don't think I need $45 balls either, but they were $5 from some old guy who has a ton of assorted used golf balls that he sells in bags of 12. So I just thought "hey, why not?"
Now if the spin created causes a nasty slice, well then I'll switch back to the dunlop's or something that I already have in my bag heh.

I wasn't trying to be mean by it I so you know, and FIVE dollars is a great price for sure. with everyone wanting to hit it longer that ball is always shorter by 10-15yds and thats one more club to the greens. and like I said in my last sentence if they play well for you and you like them, thats what counts... as you can tell I'm not a huge Titleist fan, its like people buying bottled water cause they think its better...lol
can't wait to hear back from you in a week or so how your newer swing is going.... remember chip for show and putt for dough...lol ps. if I ever give a swing tip too, it would be like a shooter, once your ready and over the ball, take a small breath and then let it all out, and Pull the Triger...

more of you guys should actually read the guys post before going crazy. He clearly stated that he paid $5 bucks for 12 used prov's, not 40 bucks. I'm half tempted to send you money and have you buy me some. 2nd, range balls are reduced flight balls with the core modified in them. Because of this, i often see range balls that are warped and fly crazy. I would venture to say that you may actually get better ball flight from prov's than you do at the range. Lastly, yes the pro v is a softer covered ball that spins at a higher rate however the amount of increased spin isn't going to be enough to turn a fade into a full blown slice or a draw into a full blown hook so you should feel very confident with teeing up those prov's. As someone else mentioned, the softer covered $45/doz balls actually do NOT go as far as cheap $10/doz balls because they spin more. However the loss of distance is generally not as dramatic as a full club as someone mentioned although it can be depending on your swing speed. Golf Magazine did a test on different balls and the only ball that was significantly shorter off the Tee was the Nike one platinum that tiger plays. If you don't have a high enough swing speed, you can't compress it enough but the fact is that at high swing speeds the ball does go as far as most other balls. Hope this sheds some light for you
