As a real newbie to the golf sport (have played maybe once/yr last 6 years with borrowed clubs); I was looking to by a complete "starter" set to begin with. Price range $220-$300 dolllars. Was looking at at set by Nextt Golf; about $200 for 460cc driver, 2 woods, 2 hybrids, 5-pw irons and putter, includes covers and golf bag. Sounds like a reasonable set to me but looking for other experienced opinions as I don't want to by junk that falls apart on the first outing. Any comments appreciated.

I picked up an Acuity Vanquish set from Dick's for $229 last year. 460cc driver, 3 and 5 woods, 3,4,5 hybrids, 6-9 irons, pw, sw, lw, putter, bag, covers for driver, woods and hybrids. Played the set 2-5 times a week from June through the end of November (replaced the drive in September... was my birthday present), and started with the set this year before I bought new irons.

Thing is, had I known what I know now about clubs, I'd have just bought a good set off of Ebay used.

ok then what would be a good used set in a very modest price range?

That's beyond my knowledge... and would depend on what you are looking for. I picked up my new (used) irons off of Ebay for $250... My driver was $125 off of demo. My 18* was 37.50 on Ebay off demo. For what it's worth, just keep an eye out over there... you could get lucky like I did, the irons I got were going for around $250 on Ebay without the sandwedge in bad shape... I got mine with the sw like brand new for the same price.

best place to start is for you to tell us about your physical attributes. Age, build, how far you hit a driver and a 5 or 9 iron. The biggest problem with starter sets is not in the quality of the product, it's in getting the proper shaft flex's and lengths. I learned the hard way and the other guy is right, knowing what I know now, i would have bought a used set or a set of clones which are knockoffs of famous brand models. Websites like gigagolf.com and diamond tour golf sell clones and there is another thread here with a very happy clone customer. I myself am a former clone user and had great results with them.

Well, I've got a four year old set upstairs collecting dust that I'll sell for $100 (all 14 clubs and bag). Standard grips in great shape, regular flex shafts in great shape, and stand bag. Need pictures? Shoot me an email.

for you this is the perfect way to get started.
there must be a walmart near you there everywhere.
they have some really good starter sets for under
150.00 all the clubs you need and a new bag...
here are the 2 1st one is 120.00 and 149.00 2nd one.

you do not need to spend a lot of money to see if
you are going to stick with this sport, and if you
do you can easily sell a set like this for all most
as much as you spent on it. if you spend more and
don't like it, clubs in the mid price range are hard
to sell as there are lots of these sets cheaper and
someone looking to up grade isn't going to buy yours.
so trust me, keep it simple and have fun for now and
play the game, as you get better you will learn what
you need and you can afford....

and before I hear that these types of sets are junk.
a church of ours bought a few sets like these for kids
to start out on, 13-17yr olds... one kid is playing rounds
in the mid 80s and hits his drives really well. needless
to say he will be getting a better set soon, but for the
yr that he has been playing them, they look and worked great.
there are many variables in golf and having 1000.00 clubs isn't
one of them...

So true blue_crush. I bought the old set I have from wal-mart and they play just as well as any other club I've touched. Just because it doesn't have the big names on it doesn't mean it's crap.

guys, the walmart sets definately AREN'T junk, however, in my experience I have noticed that most of them are mens senior flex or regular flex at best. That can be a real hindrance to someone starting out. I made the mistake of starting with a set like this and yeah, it served it's purpose but I made things a lot harder on myself than I should have and it would have only cost me about $75 more to get a starter set that would have been much more appropriate for my physical attributes.
