So you have a good Par 5 about 500yds.....
normal hole, with traps around the hole and backside.
theres a line in the front to roll in....

your having a good round with no mistakes so far....

or your behind a few strokes..... if that matters,

HOW WOULD YOU PLAY IT...

lay up and hit a wedge to the pin from 80yds
or go for it from 230yds out with a 3 wood...
and chance getting in trouble for trying...

Go for glory !

If you are playing well and start to play defensive I think it sometimes makes you worse. When the golfing Gods are shining on you take the moment and grab it.
Next week you'll probably be 3 off the tee.

500 yard par 5 isn't very long for me. If i drive it 270 i can go for it with a 3 iron vs a 3 wood. It all depends so much on course conditions etc but i don't care how the hole is laid out, for my length off the tee, I need something at least 530 yards to even get me to consider laying up

It depends on the landing area in front of the green. Anyone can span the distance with a 3-wood or whatever, but the question is whether one can be safely on the green in two, or to play safe with the GIR. As you've described the green as bunkered both sides and back (is that right?), I'd lay up for accuracy.

Pastor,
The Devil will overrule the angel in this situation and you will go for it.......and end up in the bunker! Then if you repent, you will be allowed a sand save and shall have everlasting life.

There's a par 5 at one of the courses I play that has a hard dogleg right. Thing is, there is an aggressive line you can take... as long as you don't slice it or pull it, you will be at the 150 markers, and then you're a 5 or 6 iron out, bunker on the right side of an elevated green... I always go for it and have missed two eagle puts on that hole.

I say go for it!

umm if i am 230 out i can get my 3 iron there or i could hit a nice moon ball with my five wood there is no need to lay up then i could always hit a running 4 iron and have it run up on the green but i can stop my 5 wood easy. Now if i where in the lead i would lay up becuase i can stick it from 100 yards and in almost 75 % of the time that is my strong part of my game and also i would most likely go for it becuase i know my sand game is great and i can get up and down and still get a birdie.

I'd bomb a 320 yard drive then hit a 180 yard eight iron to within three feet of the pin.

Then I would wake up hit my normal drive then hit a second shot with a fairway wood into one of the bunkers.

I wound hit my drive 260. I always go for it. Then depending on the wind hit my hybrid 4 210 or 3 wood. Then hit my log wedge in. Then hopefuly put in for birdie or par.

Unless my drive gets a good roll or good bounce on a firm surface...I would probably shoot for green in 3 by laying up and taking a much easier wedge shot in. I trust my putting enough to know I can get there in 3 and have a good shot at birdie and at the very worst, par.

Even with the best of rounds..I've probably been having the best round because I'm making the right plays. Going for it without pinpoint accuracy is just a recipe for disaster.
