I'm a 35 year old male who's about 5'8 225 and built like a bull.
I have been playing golf since I was about 17 off and on, more off than on actually. Except for the last couple of years when I have become absolutely obsessed with the game. People always think that when I'm up on the tee box that I'm going to rip this 320 yard drive, but the truth is I never hit the ball longer than about 220-230. This drives me insane! Granted it's straight, but I'm leaking power somewhere in my swing and I never get up there and try and Hulk it. I always try a nice smooth swing, but the distance always eludes me. Any thoughts?

You really need to spend the $$$ for at least one lesson from a good pro. They can watch your swing and may pick up three or four spots for distance improvement. We would just be guessing because power can be lost in so many ways. I personally leak enough power to light up a small town.

Sounds like a knuckle ball to me. The reason you get no distance is because you don't generate any spin on the ball. Definitely see a pro to find out what the fix is for this.

yeah definitely see a pro since it concerns you so much. As long as it's consistently straight and in the fairway, I'll take short and straight all day long.

if your into lifting weights then your familiar with plometrics. plyometrics basically train the body to make use of elastic energy and improve the rate at which you can exert a force. a strongman can exert a lot of force but can they do it explosively. As a personal trainer I see tons of guys my height that can outsquat me by a mile but on the basketball court I can dunk and they can't. It's all about how our bodies are trained. I'm willing to bet your strong as an ox just not Golf strong so to speak.

Good call CP. Lots of muscles you don't use for anything else go into a good golf swing. Also, hand speed is key.

You need to make sure you are creating a coil.

Your shoulder line and hip line need to make an X. If you turn your hips as much as your shoulders then you don't create any resistance and cannot produce power.

This is only an idea - as the other guys say you may need to get someone to look at your swing.

Hi total duffer,

I don't know what is causing your problem but I would be willing to bet you are not getting to your left side very well. There is a training aid a lot of tour players use, not only does it help them hit it longer but it trains golfers how to get to their left side really well. You can see a picture of it at http://www.pga-golf-tour-caddy-guide.com/Golf-Swin g-Aids.html . Hope this helps.
