HERE IS YOUR ANSWER. Here is the yards away from target if missed by 2 degrees.
Drive Distance (yds) Yards away from target 100 - 1.75 125 - 2.18 150 - 2.62 175 - 3.05 200 - 3.49 225 - 3.93 250 - 4.36 275 - 4.8 300 - 5.24
If a player were to aim for exactly the center of the fairway on a 300 yard drive and missed 2 degrees left, they would miss by 15.72 feet...most likely still on the fairway. The 150 yard drive 7.8 feet. If you change the equation to 4 degrees then the 300yd may be in trouble missing the target by 31 feet, while the 150yd drive is only missing by 15.69 feet.

Good stuff... thanks for doing the math. It doesn't account for a mi#@!$ that SPINS, but I don't think there is any way to calculate that anyways.
Also, this is a good little chart that actually supports what I was saying earlier. If you can drive the ball close 275-300 yards, when you have more room for error (fairways are wider than greens), then your chances of hitting a closer shot to the pin after your driver increases because you'll be hitting a shorter club, when there's less room for error (bunkers/water around the green, smaller greens, more target specific, etc.).

exactly the old risk-reward. Calculating pot odds (my fellow poker geeks will get that). All about course management.

No disrespect intended but:
the secret is ......... DISTORTED REALITY. This question always brings out the skeptic in me. So many people hit 300+ yards online but either cant hit a fairway to save their lives or (in my experience playing with them) can never get it passed 240 no matter how hard they try. just cuz i've hit a drive 300 yards once in my life doesnt mean i can drive it 300 yards. Just to put things into perspective:
PGA Tour-Driving Distance: September 18, 2007
Rank Name Stat
1 Bubba Watson 315.2 2 John Daly 312.3 2 J.B. Holmes 312.3 4 Robert Garrigus 311.1 5 Scott Gutschewski 306.5 6 Harrison Frazar 304.0 7 Brett Wetterich 303.9 8 Angel Cabrera 303.2 9 Steve Allan 302.7 10 Charles Warren 302.6 If that were the case, why arent any of you playing on a tour? on a side note: give me accuracy over distance ANY DAY OF THE WEEK

I wish I had a 300+ drive.
I have hit a few 300+ drives (one went about 325), but really, I'm satisfied with 250-275 consistently.
