This is a 2 stroke penalty. This rule was changed this year. Rule 12-2 means you are now allowed to pick up your ball in a hazard for identification purposes but you must inform fellow player that you are doing this so they can observe the process. rule 15-3 now states that since you are allowed to identify your ball in a hazard you incur a 2 stroke penalty for hitting the wrong ball out of a hazard

Regarding etiquette, most courses also advise people to play "Ready Golf" Ready golf is in direct contradiction with some of the rules of eitquette shown here. There is nothing I hate more than when two people are on opposite sides of the fair way but one person is away by a yard. The person who is closer is ready to hit but stands there waiting for the other person who just jumped out of the cart to walk all the way across the fairway to their ball and hit. IF your ready to hit and can safely do so, hit the friggin ball!

Nice one 65 - golfers should be tested on these before they're allowed onto a golf course, especially in Asia

Rules of Etiquette

these rules are for stroke and match play...
if you are playing ready golfthen its hard
to adhere to the etiquette practice...
cause if you just birdied the last hole and your
not ready, then someone else should tee off,
if your ready to hit from across the fairway
you should, if your near the green and the others
are still walking up to it, and you have a tap in,
then tap it in... these are the rules of ready golf.
they differ from the formal rules of which the game
was based on...... BUT, if you are playing ready golf
everyone in your group must always agree to this format.

All good rules. If I am playing alone I will usually just hang back unless the group in front of me is so slow that there is an open tee in front of them and if so will usually just ask to go around them. The kiss of death for me is a tee shot when a group lets me play through...I will usually fluff it and I am then sure they are wondering why I need to play through.
Two of my pet peeves are 1. the a#$ that yells "IN THE HOLE" on a tee shot on a 500+ yard par 5 and 2. the same a#% that hangs out their car window and yells FORE as they are driving by a golf course. I am getting so old a crabby!
Did you add looking for balls... I love waiting while someone spends 10 minutes look for a TopFlite that they just bought on sale at WalMart for 5.00 a double dozen oblivious to the backup on the tee boxes behind them. Del if you added that to your rules forgive me for missing it. Ah I see it is also might add to 17. Leaving your car in front of the green is my wifes pet peeve also the golfer who spends time rearranging his/her clubs, replacing head covers and WRITING DOWN AND DISCUSSING SCORE before you move on.

That wouldn't be Ala Wai on Oahu, would it?

Very good points. All make sense for a more enjoyable round.

I ask for very little. I'll fix your ballmark and your divot, I have and will pick up your snickers wrapper. I will brush off your cigar ash 2" from the cup. I will remove your sunflower seeds from my line. I will carefully try to rebuild the edge of the cup that your giant banana figers mangled. I will not comment on you moving back to the tips when you can barely reach the reds. I will hold onto the clubs you leave behind and resist selling them at the turn. I will accept your lineage to Lewis or Clark for your exploriatory tendencies in the woods. I even endure your "you the man" yelps, and your jeans and tee shirts. Just please,...................play quickly or get out of the way.

Ask your club to encourage aggressive rangering.
