The Myrtle Beach region of South Carolina has been called "The Seaside Golf Capital of the World." The 60 miles of beachfront features a spectacular array of professionally designed courses. Accommodations and entertainment options are available for large or small groups, families and conventions.
The possibilities are endless. The leading golf resorts can tailor a package for you, or you can book a condo and design your own excursion.
Features:
The Grand Strand area contains more than 100 public or semiprivate golf courses appealing to both the novice and seasoned player. Hotels, condominiums, resorts, campgrounds and RV sites create a spectrum of accommodations and offer golf and entertainment packages at discounted prices. Packages include greens fees, cart fees and taxes. With a Stay and Play package for four people in the off-season, three nights and four rounds can cost $300 per golfer.
Benefits:
Other attractions include Ripley's Aquarium, Alligator Adventures, Family Kingdom, NASCAR Speedpark and Wild Water and Wheels. Suncruz Myrtle Beach offers a 5-hour casino excursion. The area offers venues for water activities such as fishing and parasailing. The Intracoastal Waterway connects to the Little River and Winyah Bay and is also popular for boating and fishing.
Time Frame:
Golf can be played year-round. Vacationers in summer and chilly weather in winter account for lower golfing rates during these times of year. The winter season averages below 59 degrees F with lows that can dip into the mid-30s. The summer months average 88 degrees F, but can be affected by short storms. Spring is prime time for resort rates because of temperatures averaging 60 to 70 degrees F and little threat from rainouts.
Warning:
Hurricane season lasts from June through November. The area is affected by hurricanes every 3.61 years on average. Golfers should also always check about course availability due to maintenance work.
Geography:
Myrtle Beach International Airport, in the south end of the region, is serviced by ASA/Delta/Comair, Continental, Myrtle Beach Direct Air, Spirit, Northwest, Southern Skyways, United and U.S. Airways. Driving time is 3 hours from Raleigh, North Carolina, 6 hours from Atlanta, 4 hours from Charlotte, North Carolina, and 7 hours from Washington, D.C. U.S. 501 and S.C. 544 are major routes to the Grand Strand. Locations in the region are accessible on Ocean Boulevard and Kings Highway, which run north and south parallel to the Atlantic Coast and the Highway 17 Bypass on the western edge. Other roads that also connect the area are the Carolina Bays Parkway and Robert M. Grissom Parkway.
