Golf Swing Lessons

Golf Swing Lessons
The golf swing can be interpreted in many ways. To say that one way is the one and only way is false. However, there are basics that everyone should follow when giving or taking a golf lesson. Proper use of the basics can help avoid wayward shots, although details and customization will be different for everyone.

Grip

Turn your left hand palm up and place it under the grip, with the grip resting in your fingers. Wrap the fingers around the grip with the thumb pointing down the middle of the grip. Take your right hand and place the palm crease on top of the left thumb, wrapping the rest of the fingers around the grip. Make sure the thumb is just to the left of the grip and it is pinching with the right pointer finger. Now you have a basic grip.

Stance

Place the club head behind the golf ball and stand about a yard away with the feet together. With each foot, step about 12 inches from the center equal distance. Flex the knees slightly, straighten the spine and let the arms hang down naturally.

Takeaway

Keeping the body steady, turn the shoulders to take the club head back to start the swing. Start to cock the wrists to bring the club head up, with the toe of the club pointing to the sky. Keep turning the shoulders and then the torso and then the hips. The left leg will flex at this time but be sure to keep the right knee solid. Stop the backswing when the club shaft is parallel to the ground and above your head.

Downswing

Start the downswing with a slight hip shift forward and let the rest of the body turn toward the target. Keep your eye on the ball and watch the club head hit it.

Follow through

After striking the golf ball turn you entire body so your stomach faces the target, get all your weight on your forward foot and get you back foot on the toe. Your hands should be all the way around to the back of your head.

Expert Insight

Try to do this as smoothly as you can. Be aggressive at the ball and keep your head down. Once you have the general swing down, consult a teaching professional for some custom swing tips. One of the best places to get custom tips is the PGA instruction website http://www.pga.com/instruction/. You can also find local golf professionals there.
