Specs
One of the first drivers constructed with a square clubhead design, the FT-I offers several innovative features. Its carbon composite head, along with an ultra-hot titanium cup face, improves club head speed and maximizes distance off the tee. The FT-I also boasts a 460cc clubhead that allows ultimate forgiveness. Additionally, the driver's square design and Callaway's exclusive fusion technology creates ideal perimeter weighting that translates to fewer mis-hits and greater consistency.
Perks
While Callaway's FT-I driver comes in several different variations, the HT model deploys a 13-degree loft that allows for ideal launch angles. Furthermore, the stiff flex shaft is comfortable for players with higher swing speeds. Many recreational golfers have a high swing speed, but their inexperience causes difficulty with ball flight. The 13-degree loft and stiff shaft provide players with the best of both worlds and reaches a wide variety of skill levels outside of just novices.
Sacrifices
Traditional golfers may find the FT-I's unique look undesirable at address. Unlike other more common designs that feature a rounded clubhead, the FT-I is square. Additionally, the FT-I has been replaced with a new and improved model--the FT-iQ--making it somewhat dated in terms of technology. For players with a naturally higher ball flight, the 13-degree loft can equate to a loss of distance, particularly in windy conditions.
Competition
With numerous companies beginning to focus on game-improvement category, the FT-I has competed with several different opposing brands, including the Nike SasQuatch, TaylorMade Burner, Cleveland HiBore along with a host of others.
Bottom Line
For beginning and recreational golfers who don't demand the latest specifications in research and development, Callaway's FT-I driver offers an excellent alternative to new and more expensive drivers on the market. The FT-I is still an extremely forgiving driver, which allows players of all calibers to maximize distance and consistency.
