Technology
The Big Bertha is a titanium-headed driver with what Callaway calls a stretched head that allows the center of gravity to be placed farther back from the clubface and low in the club to promote a higher, driving trajectory. Featuring a maximum 460cc head and super thin face, this club delivers the most MOI allowable from conforming clubs.
Loft
Available in a variety of lofts, this particular club is 9 degrees, which favors a skilled player who tends to have a high natural launch angle, hitting the ball on the upswing. Generally speaking, the more loft a club has, the larger the sweet spot, but a driver with a lower loft like this 9-degree model has the potential to produce a lower, more driving ball flight.
Shafts
The Big Bertha 460 comes standard with an Aldila NVS graphite shaft. This low-torque shaft has a high kick point that keeps the launch angle on the club down in a more driving shape. The regular shaft in this particular club is designed for average to slower swing speeds in the 85- to 95-mph range.
Alignment
The stretched shape of this driver combined with its consistent alignment sole and what was a new feature in this club--the correct alignment stripe--make this club particularly easy to see the target line and launch the ball straight at your aiming point. Good golf thrives on confidence, and confidence comes from feeling like you are going to hit the ball where you intend to every time.
Price
Originally priced at almost $400 from the manufacturer, the Big Bertha 460 is still available from many retailers in new remainder stock for about $140 or used from the Callaway pre-owned website for as little as $110 depending on condition of the club.
